Arnis - What is it?
Chris Demonstrates basic blocking,
using her stick to intercept Matts
strike. This is a begining technique
learned in stick vs stick fighting.
Manny demonstrates locking/disarm
technique to counter Guy's strike.
Disarming and basic locking and
throwing are learned during training
as a green belt.
Sparring is an integral part of training. In this
photo Guy and Manny model the live stick
sparring protective equipment. They are also
using padded sticks. The protective
equipment is used in live stick sparring,
normally we wear only the helmet when
sparring with the padded sticks. We prefer a
few bruises to wearing the hot padding since
its almost always 80F or more during our
training.
Lakan Guro Mike teaches Chris the basic
tapi-tapi drill for hand to hand training. This
drill is a choreographed sequence of moves
and is a basic drill that is first learned in
empty hand drills and then applied to
different combinations of weapons.
Joey sets out the food at one of our Arnis
fellowships. We invite other camps to visit us for
followship, sparring, training, and also eating. All
of the Lapunti camps are part of our international
association. The International Headquarters is in
Cebu City, Philippines. The Luzon main camp
meets in Quezon City, and the Rizal Chapter
meets in near by Antipolo.
Arnis, sometimes called Escrima, is a martial art that is
indigenous to the Philippines. A close relative of Kali,
Arnis emphasises training using weapons. The training
begins with instruction in fighting using sticks. Training
proceeds with the practitioner learning to use single stick,
double stick, dagger, stick and dagger, and empty hand
techniques following an approved curriculum sequence.
In our Arnis group we learn to use different
combinations of weapons. Here Lakan Guro
Mike scores on Guy during a round of sparring
using practice daggers. Dagger sparring is
limited to senior students.
