The Roman Republic was
formed in 509 BC, when the
people of Rome overthrew the
last king of Rome and formed
what we now call a
limited-democracy.
27 B.C.
The formation of the Roman Empire
458-396 B.C.
Rome conquered its neighbors through a
series of wars in order to gain more land
and also to secure it's position against
other city-states.
133 B.C.
Tiberius and Garius Gracchus
When the Gracchus brothers, Tiberius and
Garius, attempted to reform the senate, they
were killed by senate-incited mobs. The senate
did this because they didn't want to give up their
money or power
146 B.C.
The famous Carthagian general Hannibal once
said: "We will either find a way, or make one."
During the 2nd Punic War, Hannibal brought a
large army of men and elephants over the Alps to
surprise Rome. This worked, but he was
defeated when he was forced to retreat to
Carthage in order to defend the city.
264-146 B.C.
Rome fought 3 wars with Carthage.
These are called the Punic wars.
Rome won in the 1st war. Carthage
retaliated and sent Hannibal to Rome.
He would have succeeded, except
that Rome attacked his city while he
was still in Italy. Carthage was
completely destroyed in the 3rd war.
March 44 B.C.
Julius Caesar was murdered by the senate
because the senate believed he was going
to make himself king. The senate didn't
want this to happen because they didn't
want to lose their power.
459 B.C.
The laws of Rome were carved on
tablets and put in the Forum, allowing
the common folk to appeal a verdict
handed down from a landowning judge
