Guy salvaging re-usable tower parts in
the wreckage of typhoon milenyo.
160ft of tower fell when one of
the guy wires failed. By
salvaging the few undamaged
pieces, 50ft of really ugly tower
could be pieced together. The
team brought along another 25
feet of "fine pre-owned tower"
from Manila to bring the total
height of the temporary
transmitting antenna to 75ft
We aren't making concrete with
dirt, thats just the color of the fine
volcanic sand available in Legaspi.
The beaches are black too. As the
tower fell the forces twisted the guy
anchor supports and broke up
some of the concrete in the
foundations, so the crew had to
start out on the ground.
Guys Photos - Station DWAS
Double Typhoon Tragedy at DWAS - Nov/Dec, 2006
With all the partly bent members in
use, this may be the ugly tower of all
time. Then again.........
FEBC Philipine's radio station DWAS in Legaspi, Albay Province, has been taken off the air
twice in consecutive months. After typhoon Mileny toppled the 160ft transmitting tower Guy
led a team of engineers and riggers to Legaspi to erect and test a 75ft temporary
transmitting tower to get the station back on the air.
Guy and crew finished their field strength tests on a Monday morning and then returned to
Manila. On the following Thursday morning, super typhoon Durian made landfall directly
across the station. With 200 MPH winds and torrential rains, the toll of death is well over
1000. Most of the dead were killed in landslides of volcanic mud (lahar) that cascaded
down the adjacent Mayon vocano.
Repairing Damaged Guy Anchors with
some extra concrete. Hand mixed!
60ft up and 15 to go, ugly but useful
